Welcome to Frome Amateur Operatic Society

"There can't be many organisations in Somerset that have been in existence for one hundred years but the Frome Amateur Operatic Society have done just that! Their first performance, "Trial by Jury" by Gilbert and Sullivan, was presented in the Market Hall - now known as the Cheese and Grain - in April 1906, and since then, apart from two world wars, they have presented a popular musical each year.

The Society has spread its wings since 1947 by the foundation of an Opera Group (performing Grand Opera in concert version) in 1967 and concerts by them became part of the Society’s annual calendar. Fashions have changed over time and the Opera Group has now evolved into singing selections from the popular operetta and musicals repertoire.

Then in 1979 a Pantomime Group was created (performing traditional family pantomimes just after Christmas) followed by a youth section in 1989 called Spellbound (for young people aged between 8 and 16 years wishing to experience on-stage activities).

The Society now enjoys the thrill of playing to full houses at practically every show and they are considered to be one of the best Societies in the West of England.
