42nd Street

Spellbound began 19 years ago, would you believe. Over the years it has evolved and developed into a first class centre of opportunity for our younger members to shine and gain valuable experience in the world of musical theatre. This was very evident in this production, with some brilliant performances shining through. Many congratulations must go to Rosie Nicholson, Director, Kerry Bishop, Musical Director and Emma Hill, Choregrapher and of course not forgetting the excellent work done behind the scenes by Karen Bishop, Spellbound Manager and her team of helpers.

What a fantastic array of costumes all created by our dedicated team of seamstresses. Their hard work was extremely worthwhile and really enhanced this colourful production and along with the excellent skills of the stage crew, the children had the very best support to help them pull off an undeniably brilliant show.

Many congratulations to Alex Williams, who won the Charles Hart Trophy, well deserved and clearly a popular choice among the cast. Philip Hart instigated the award to encourage and reward the enthusiasm and hard work of young Spellbound performers. Alex's individual performance as Billy Lawlor was outstanding. He is also a talented musician and indeed was brilliant on keyboards in the 'Little Band of Horrors'.

We were also treated to fantastic performances from Dora Bishop, Ellie Taylor-Roberts, Sophie Rozycka, Freddie Lee, Ben Griffiths, Sam Corke, Ross Toten, Andy Lee, Jack de Quidt, Tom Carpenter and Ashley Stewart who all played principal and minor principal roles with great talent and conviction.

The tap dancing was particularly demanding and principals and the dancers, under the direction of Emma, made it all look easy, but clearly they would have worked really hard on this aspect of the show.

Excellent performances were also displayed by Senior and Junior chorus members and all were brilliantly accompanied by Kerry's excellent 42nd Street Band. There is not enough room for me to mention all involved - I counted well over 100 names in the programme; what a fantastic team effort and what a fantastic production. Loved it.
