REVIEW by Claire Wilson of the Somerset Standard
The Frome Amateur Operatic Society's (FAOS) Christmas production of Mother Goose can only be described in one word - Egg-sellent!
With a cast of old and new the Society has once agan put on a fantastic production for all the family. The story of Mother Goose, which was first performed as a pantomime in 1903 is the third time the Society has produced it, the last time being in 1999.
Directed by Andrew Carpenter, who also played the evil Demon of Discontent and choregraphed by Joanne Plenty, the story tells the moral tale of Mother Goose, played excellently by Humphrey Barnes, who is about to be thrown off her land by the Squire, expertly played by Stevie McStevie for rent arrears. But soon after the threat is issued along comes Priscilla the magic goose sent by the Fairy Fortune and lays golden eggs, which makes Mother Goose very rich.
The Demon of Discontent has a bet with Fairy Fortune, played by the returning actress Stephanie Hoar, that no matter how rich a person is they still want more - and Mother Goose proves him right. He tempts Mother Goose with the one thing she hasn't got - youth and beauty. She soon sends Priscilla home to Gooseland and jumps into the magic pool, emerging into what she thinks is a beautiful woman.
She realises that beauty isn't everything and pleads to be re-united with her family and friends. The Fairy grants her this wish but without the riches she once had - which Mother Goose agrees to gladly. Thus giving the happy ending everyone hoped for.
Another great actor to watch for future productions is 17 year old Leigh Walker, who played Mother Goose's hapless son Silly Billy and had the audience in fits of laughter with his antics.
With fantastic songs, brilliant dancing, amazing costumes and great music, all directed by Kerry Bishop, this could have only ever been a success.
There was lots of audience interaction and laughs along the way - a truly wonderful tale to forget the worries of the world and enjoy this enchanting egg-stravaganza.
