Calamity Jane

Spellbound's Summer production was 'Calamity Jane' and was performed from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th August 2009.  

The DVD night took place on Tuesday 29th September.

The young members of FAOS Spellbound perform each Summer at the Memorial Theatre and always entertain the audience with an outstanding show!

Spellbound was the brainchild of FAOS member Andrew Carpenter (FAOS Chairman), when in 1989 he proposed that the Society should have a section dedicated to young people.  Originally it was for 13-24 year olds but that soon changed to young people in school years 4-11. 

Andrew's thoughts were to have a part of the Society that would not only introduce young people to live theatre, but also hopefully get them 'hooked' and eventually provide the main Society with their stars of the future.  This has undoubtedly worked very well and many of the principal performers from Spellbound productions have gone on to take leading roles in the FAOS's adult productions.

Nowadays, about 100 young people attend audition rehearsals for Spellbound productions over Easter.  About 60 go on to perform on stage in the August Spellbound show.  In many ways, Spellbound epitomises what an amateur theatre group is all about and brings together children, parents and volunteers to put together what is very much a community production that gives pleasure to many people and a deep feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction for all involved.

Increasingly, Spellbound has become a wider education experience in offering the older young people a chance of helping and sometimes running support functions such as music and dance training, preparation of scenery and technical operations.  Sub-sets from a production will often visit community groups such as elderley people's homes to perform extracts from forthcoming shows and help with publicity.

The FAOS Spellbound Show in August 2010 will be 'Guys & Dolls'.  Further details will be available from February on this website.  New members always welcome.
